Palace of Fine Arts

🏛 ArchitectureMarina

Designed by Bernard Maybeck, the Palace of Fine Arts is the only surviving structure from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition. The rotunda and colonnade sit beside a reflective lagoon, creating one of SF's most photographed scenes. The structure was rebuilt in concrete in the 1960s after decades of decay.

Did you know?

Maybeck intended the structure to evoke a Roman ruin — the melancholy of lost grandeur was part of the design.
